7th Period Intensive Language Arts

In this class, we focus on improving students' reading comprehension, vocabulary, language and writing skills. We use multiple resources to meet the students at their levels of need in these language arts areas, and work toward improving and mastering these skills.

Our main text is Inside, published by Cengage Learning. This text allows the students to practice and improve their understanding of fictional and informational types of text.

Reading Plus is a computer-based program wherein students practice reading informational and fictional text on their own lexile level. I have found this program to be highly-effective in improving students' reading comprehension and vocabulary. Vocabulary is such an important part of reading, and Reading Plus has an excellent vocabulary component that will aid the students in building their word knowledge. Lastly, students can utilize Reading Plus to increase their reading speed.

Weekly Reading Plus Assignments: All students are responsible for completing 4 See Readers and 4 Read Arounds each week. They are assigned on Monday, and are due the following Sunday at midnight.

Homework: If students do not finish the weekly Reading Plus assignments at school, they are responsible for completing them for homework. Occasionally, students may also have unfinished vocabulary or writing assignments that will need to be completed as homework.
